Elderly woman attempts suicide in funeral home freezer

Employees at a Shanghai funeral home were scared stiff after finding an elderly woman in the freezer who refused to get out on June 5.

The woman, who is in her seventies, crawled into the mortuary freezer and covered herself with a bed sheet in a suicide attempt.

Workers discovered the unnamed woman after noticing the storage freezer was left half open. Luckily, the freezer was switched off.

The unnamed woman was taken to a Jiading district hospital and found to be in good health.

"She was lying so still and straight, you would have thought she was dead," said one mortuary employee.

The woman was found arrive at the funeral home in a taxi and exit without paying the driver, said the report.

"We knew something was not right so we went looking for her," said an employee. Afterwards our boss came and tried to get her to come out [of the freezer]. But she just kept lying there. So we called an ambulance."

According to the report, the woman has a history of depression and had attempted suicide before.
