Temperatures have hit record levels in parts of northern China, with highs in some places reaching nearly 40 Celsius degrees. Weather authorities in the cities of Beijing and Tianjin as well as Hebei province have issued a Yellow Alert for High Temperatures, the third highest level possible.
Experts have also warned people to limit their outdoor activities to avoid heatstroke. The National Center for Disease Control also warned that the rising temperatures could aid the spread of infections.
The national weather forecaster predicts the heatwave will linger in the region for another three days.
