A bus passenger suffered minor injuries attempting to escape through a window after she mistakenly thought the vehicle was on fire in Chengdu, Sichuan province.

The woman surnamed Hu walked away with cuts on her arm and head after smashing the large bus window with a nearby emergency hammer and jumping through it.

Hu claimed she smelled a strong burning smell and felt the bus was going to spontaneously combust.

"I may have made the wrong call," Hu said.

Luo Yong, the bus driver, said that he pulled over and immediately evacuated the vehicle after hearing the commotion.

Surveillance video later showed the other passengers had remained calm throughout the ordeal, and a safety check revealed no damage to the bus, said Luo.

Li Ou, head of security for the bus company, explained that cases involving passengers breaking glass to escape have occurred every summer for the past three years.
