A pedestrian faces hit-and-run charges following the death of a 75-year-old e-bike rider last week in Nanjing, Jiangsu province.

Police said the pedestrian, surnamed Li, was detained on Saturday for fleeing after the elderly rider died from injuries sustained after he collided into him while driving in front of the entrance of Nanjing University of Science and Technology on April 17.

A nearby shop employee, who identified Li at the scene, claimed Li fled and ran into his shop while the e-bike rider lay still on the street.

The elderly man died the next day in hospital. Li suffered minor bruises.

Though police have not determined which party is at fault, a preliminary investigation determined that Li had illegally crossed the street.
