A woman has been arrested in Qingpu district for stealing 25,000 yuan ($4,007) from a married man whom she was having an affair with, local police said Wednesday.

The suspect, surnamed Zhang, 39, faces theft charges for taking the money from the man's bag while he was out, according to a press release from the Qingpu District Public Security Bureau.

Zhang came to Shanghai in 2008 to work at a foot massage parlor in Jinze town, police said. Although she was married and had a son, she started sleeping with a married customer, surnamed Lu.

On January 7, she went to Lu's fish farm to ask him for money for the upcoming Spring Festival holiday. Lu, who was not pleased with the request, gave her 2,000 yuan, police said. The next day, she asked for more money, telling Lu that her father needed surgery.

Lu refused because he didn't believe her story, so Zhang decided to steal from him when they met on January 9. She took the money around 7 am on January 10 after Lu stepped out, police said. She then traveled back to her hometown.

Lu contacted Zhang, but she denied stealing the money, so he called the police. Zhang did not return to Shanghai after the holiday because she was afraid of being arrested.

She later returned to the area and opened her own foot massage parlor near Lu's farm. She said she came back to Shanghai because she wanted to earn money and also because she missed Lu.

Qingpu police arrested Zhang on April 16. She confessed to taking the money.
