Two-star Michelin chef Mauro Colagreco's second China project might transcend his first. Shanghai's Unico by Mauro Colagreco claims a prime Bund-side location but we are more enchanted by his new and more unexpected dining room in Nanjing, where not just the menu stuns but the entire grounds of this exclusive new hotel project exude an intoxicating historic aura, as though you have slipped back 70 years into the Republic of China era.

The just-opened Yihe Mansions is a government project of boggling proportions. Not one yuan has been spared in the restoration and decoration of this 26-villa hotel campus, from elegant solid wood furniture to Iranian green marble and vast bathrooms large enough for pre-prandial cocktails.

In the 1920s when Nanjing was the seat of the Nationalist government, these grounds housed the private estates of ambassadors, the wealthy and the military elite. Since 2007, the local Nanjing government has been quietly buying up the estates in order to restore and preserve them. Yihe Mansions is the first of similar restorations throughout the city.

The Yihe Mansions is at 3 Jiangsu Lu, Gulou district, Nanjing (025 8803 8999; yihemansions.com). 南京市鼓楼区江苏路3号
