A man was detained yesterday afternoon after stabbing three police officers who had gone to his home to question him about a separate incident.

When the officers arrived at the property on Xiangyang Road N. in Jing'an District, the man, surnamed Yan, launched an unprovoked attack on them, police claimed.

They did not give details of why they had visited the property in the first place.

Armed with two knives, Yan allegedly stabbed one officer in the back and arm, and slashed at the two others, causing wounds to their hands.

Backup was requested and the additional officers were able to subdue Yan, police said.

The injured officers were taken to hospital and treated for their wounds.

Police said the 50-something Yan lives alone and is known for getting involved in disputes with his neighbors, one of whom said he has a habit of throwing firecrackers at passersby.
