A senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Liu Yunshan on Tuesday urged efforts to ensure the selection of leaders and officials be carried out in a fair and honest manner.

Liu, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a forum attended by organization authority chiefs of some provincial-level CPC committees.

The official selection should follow correct principles which put emphasis on the candidates' ideological integrity, willingness to serve the public, diligent attitude, sense of responsibility and honesty, Liu said. Moreover, officials should be appointed to positions where their abilities can be fully developed.

Liu urged Party organizations to take the responsibility of ensuring that official selection is properly conducted without unfair and corrupt practices.

Proper qualifications of the candidates, due procedures and ethical integrity of the officials should be guaranteed, he said.

Liu also called for efforts to address the problems of overstaffing and freeloaders in Party and government agencies as well as promotions of officials with fake personal data.

Practices such as "buying and selling" of positions, illegal intervening in official selections and unfair "fastrack" promotions should be investigated and punished, he added.

The forum was presided over by Zhao Leji, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee.
