Tsinghua University announced on April 7 that they have successfully developed the first domestic brain pacemaker. The rechargeable device will hit the market in 2014, the Beijing Times reported.

By the end of March, 2014, 600 people had been implanted with the Tsinghua device.

Brain pacemakers have shown promise in staving off the symptoms of Parkinson's disease; approximately 100,000 patients worldwide have been treated with it. Additionally, brain pacemakers can also be used to treat neurological and mental illnesses such as epilepsy and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
