Hungary has been working hard in the past years to enhance ties with China, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told a Monday international news conference in Budapest.

Commenting on Chinese decision to import Hungarian meat, Orban said this was an excellent opportunity to improve Hungary's presence on Chinese markets. Orban noted that Hungary and China maintained a strategic collaboration, which included offering Chinese businesses opportunities to make investments in Hungary.

Last Friday, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto said Hungary will be sending frozen pork, geese, and ducks to China, underlining that economic ties with China were a cornerstone of Hungary's strategy of "Opening up towards the East."

Hungary would very much like to boost exports to Asia, Szijjarto said, adding that food industry exports are slated to be its flagship sector.

Hungary, Szijjarto said, produces high quality and safe foodstuff, and guarantees that its products are GMO (genetically modified organisms) free, since the ban on GMOs has been set down in the country's constitution.
