China on Wednesday held ceremonies to commemorate the 89th anniversary of the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a renowned statesman who led the revolution ending imperial rule in China.

In Beijing, a ceremony was held in Zhongshan Park, a park named after Sun.

The ceremony was presided over by Qi Xuchun, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and was joined by representatives from all walks of life in Beijing.

They observed a moment of silence and bowed three times in front of the Sun Yat-sen Statue.

Also on Wednesday, local officials and citizens in east China's Jiangsu Province marked the day at the mausoleum of Sun in Nanjing, the province's capital city, honoring his achievements in the revolution and calling for national reunification.

Sun was born in 1866 and died in 1925. He is known to the Chinese as a "great revolutionary and statesman" for his leading role during the 1911 Revolution, which overthrew the imperial Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and put an end to more than 2,000 years of feudal rule in China.
