Boxes stuffed with millions of yuan in cash were found in the toilet of a house whose mysterious tenant disappeared in the city of Jieyang, Guangdong province, South China, on Saturday.
The landlord had rented the three-story house to a man with a native accent and a pseudonym-like name since 2011, but when payments stopped a few months ago, he decided to pay a visit.
Lancheng district police eventually helped the landlord pry open the door where inside they found a sedan covered in thick dust and boxes stuffed with cash totaling millions of yuan in a second-floor toilet.
Nearby hardware market store owners told police the tenant had hardly been seen and always covered the windows with newspaper.
Police are investigating a connection with a case in the city of Dongguan, Guangdong province in October last year when an apartment owner found 6.33 million yuan ($1.04 million) stashed under a bed. That tenant was also rumored to be a Jieyang native and drove a similar car.
