A woman in Haimen, Jiangsu province, has financially supported a poverty-stricken student for 13 years, but they did not meet until this weekend, Yangtze Evening News reported on Tuesday.

In 2001, Yu Chunwei, deputy director of Haimen local taxation bureau, read a story about a student named Ma Ying in Changwu county, Shaanxi province, who was planning to drop out of school because her poverty-stricken family could not support her. Yu decided to help Ma by sending her cash and clothes.

Ma wrote Yu a letter, thanking her for the support, and Yu continued to support Ma, sending her money and notes of encouragement. In the letters, Yu called Ma her daughter, and Ma called Yu her mother.

On Sunday, Ma, 22, who is now a college student, met Yu in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, for the first time.
