A man who was arrested in Nanjing, Jiangsu province for setting fire to a roadside vehicle on Tuesday told police he set the blaze because he was drunk and wanted to keep warm.

Firemen rushed to extinguish the yellow Volkswagen Beetle, which was thoroughly-charred from the blaze.

The suspect surnamed Chen was caught several hours later with the help of a surveillance video placing him at the scene.

Video footage showed Chen first approached the Beetle around 6 am. He then threw a piece of straw mat on top of the car, lit it and fled the scene. The car was soon engulfed in flames.

"I thought burning the car would keep me warm. I left after the fire became big because it got too hot," he said.

Chen, who is in his 20s, is under criminal detention for arson and an investigation is underway.
