Heavy fog caused cancellation of the majority of flights on Friday in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan province.

The fog has reduced visibility to below 100 meters and affected all inbound and outbound flights, a statement from the local airport said. More than 290 of the 316 scheduled flights on Friday had been canceled as of 4:50 p.m., the statement said.

China Southern Airlines plans to cancel all its inbound and outbound flights for Friday.

The airport has arranged 65 shuttle buses to take passengers back to the city and advised them to find other means of transport.

The fog is forecast to continue for some time.

The unfavorable weather has impeded passengers' travels on the first day of a seven-day holiday, the Spring Festival. Friday is New Year's Day on the Chinese lunar calendar.
