Seven additional human cases of the H7N9 avian flu have been reported in China. That brings the total number of infections in China to 48 this year alone.

Among the new cases announced on Wednesday, three were reported in the southern province of Guangdong, three in the eastern province of Zhejiang, while the other came from east China's Jiangsu province.

So far in 2014, Zhejiang province has reported 32 cases of human infection, the highest in the country. Neighboring Fujian province has reported seven, while Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces have each had three cases.

Meanwhile, Shanghai has confirmed two bird flu infections this year, with Hong Kong reporting one case of its own.
