A policeman who gave a baby head injuries in throwing it to the ground after a drinking session last summer stood trial on Tuesday at a court in central China's Henan province.

Guo Zengxi, of the Public Security Bureau of Linzhou City, confessed to his crime and apologized to the baby's family during the trial at the people's court of Wenfeng District in the city of Anyang.

"I feel regretful for what I've done. I apologize to the baby's parents and I will try my best to compensate them," Guo said.

Guo grabbed a seven-month-old girl from her parents and threw her to the ground outside a karaoke club in Linzhou after drinking with his friends on July 18. The baby was rushed to a local hospital and was found to be suffering multiple head injuries.

He was detained on August 17 on suspicion of the crime of intentional injury.

The court will announce the verdict on another date.
