Residents of Foshan, a city in Guangdong province, have been treated to a free performance of the Ming dynasty classic "The Peony Pavilion" at a downtown theater.

The show is part of efforts by the local government to treat residents to classic stage works. The opera tells the supernatural story of two young lovers. Using modern stage design and lighting, and sung by some of the biggest stars of Guangdong opera, the adaptation has been well received by locals both young and old. The opera has attracted 900 residents, who all got tickets via phone or online. Another round of free tickets to this version of "The Peony Pavilion" will be held right after the Spring Festival.
