The People's Liberation Army's central command has ordered the military to buy only Chinese vehicles, which are far cheaper than foreign ones. The decision follows a set of new rules announced last year to tighten the use of military license plates on luxury cars.

German brands such as Mercedes, BMW and Audi, will no longer be allowed to carry military license plates.

The Chinese military will also limit its official trips. Expensive receptions will be banned along with receiving gifts.

To further reign in corruption and excessive waste, the army will strictly control new construction and the renting of official buildings.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, Beijing has announced it will close all private clubs and high-end entertainment places in parks, following the temporary shut down of high class restaurants in Beihai Park, a famous imperial garden.
