A waiting patient threw scalding water in the face of a nurse at a hospital in Pudong New Area Saturday after she asked him to leave, local media reported Sunday.

The nurse, who was not identified, suffered injuries to her eyes and blisters on her face, Xinmin Evening News reported.

She did not show up for work at Gongli Hospital Sunday and refused media requests for interviews.

The patient began arguing with the nurse around 5 pm after she told him that he wouldn't be able to have an examination at the hospital's type-B ultrasonic department because the department was about to close for the day.

After splashing her with hot water, the man punched her in the face several times and left the hospital. He remained at large Sunday.

The hospital has handed over surveillance camera footage and other evidence to police.

It was not the first time that patients lashed out at hospital staff this month. A nurse was left with bruises after a drunk couple attacked her around 3 am on New Year's Day.
