An abandoned baby has been left at the recently established "safe haven" in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, Xinhua News Agency reported Monday.

The baby is the first to be left at the safe haven since it was established in early December.

Cheng Chunying, deputy director of the Xi'an welfare home for children, the baby was taken to the safe haven on the evening on Dec 4. Medical checks showed that the baby boy, about a month old, has Down's syndrome, congenital heart disease and severe pneumonia. The boy is still undergoing emergency treatment in a hospital's intensive care unit.

Equipped with an incubator, crib and electric heater, the safe haven for abandoned children - next to the gate of the welfare home - is the first such facility in the province.
