Pudong New Area police arrested a local man for robbing a convenience store in the district Tuesday night, eastday.com reported.

The man had visited the store twice before the robbery to case the location, the report said. He entered the store at 10:43 pm and threatened the staff with a meat cleaver.

One of the clerks told the robber that they didn't have much money left on the premises, but suggested that he take what he wanted from the shelves.

While the robber was grabbing items, the clerk triggered the store's silent alarm, which alerted police to the robbery.

Responding officers arrived five minutes later and incapacitated the robber with pepper spray.
