A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Sunday called for rigorous inspection on the "mass-line" campaign in order to improve officials' work styles.

Liu Yunshan, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks at a symposium attended by 16 inspection team leaders from organs of the CPC Central Committee and government.

The one-year campaign was launched in June by China's leaders to boost ties between CPC officials and members and the people, while cleaning up undesirable work styles such as formalism, bureaucracy, hedonism and extravagance.

The campaign includes various stages, including special sessions for officials to launch criticism of colleagues and themselves, rectification of problems, and inspection teams to supervise the results.

Liu asked organs of the CPC Central Committee and government to take the lead in correcting undesirable work styles found in the first stage of the campaign.

He noted that principal officials should set an example by heading the campaign in each unit and straightening out their own behavior first, adding that extravagance such as giving gifts and enjoying banquets with public funds should be rigorously restricted.
