A 29-year-old construction worker has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for raping a college student he picked up online by posing as a handsome lawyer, a district court said Wednesday.

The defendant, who was not identified, met the victim through a location-based mobile app that allows users to chat with strangers, according to a press release from Xuhui District People's Court.

The defendant, who said he was drunk, asked the woman to come to his hotel room. Although it was around midnight, she agreed to meet him because she was looking for a new boyfriend, the court said.

When she arrived at the hotel around 12:20 am, she was surprised to find that the man didn't look anything like the picture he posted online.

Once she was in the room, he forced her to have sex with him. The girl submitted because she was afraid, the court said. She was able to leave the room around 2 am.

About 10 days later, she received a text from the man asking to meet her again.

When she refused, he sent her a video of her showering in their previous hotel room. He told her that he would post the video online if she refused to meet him.

She then called the police, who told her to agree to meet him again. They then arrested him in the hotel room he had rented for their meeting.
