Sixteen people got stuck Saturday morning on the Mega-Lite roller coaster at the Happy Valley theme park in Songjiang district, local media reported.
The coaster ground to a halt at 10:32 am due to a sensor malfunction. The stranded riders had to get off the coaster via an emergency staircase. It took 18 minutes for all of them to climb down to safety, according to a report on the news website xinmin.cn.
A park manager said the Mega-Lite will automatically shut down if any of its 200 sensors goes off, but it doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem with the roller coaster.
The incident was the third time that one of Happy Valley's roller coasters has broken down since July.
