Spain has been a hotbed of artistic talent for centuries, producing some of the best artists the world has ever seen. Now, to mark 40 years of diplomatic relations between Spain and China, an exhibition has taken the best of Chinese art to Madrid.

The exhibition, named "A new horizon", aims to introduce top contemporary Chinese art to Spanish audiences. Many of the pieces on display here belong to the National Art Museum of China and are being shown for the first time in Spain.

Ma Suling, deputy curator of National Art Museum of China, says the 60 pieces represent the achievements of Chinese painting after the reform and opening up of China. "I think it will be very informative for Spanish audiences," Ma said.

The exhibition is divided into three segments entitled social reform, poetic nature and diverse explorations. Each part comprises of water colours, oil-paintings, sculptures and photography.

Organizers hope to represent the growing and vibrant Chinese art scene through this exhibition, that lasts until early 2014.
