The Diving Roller Coaster Ride at Happy Valley theme park in Songjiang district abruptly stopped operating 60 meters above the ground at 11:30 am Saturday due to a malfunction.
It was carrying 28 visitors at the time, who were forced to walk down an emergency escape staircase.
It is not the first time the ride has malfunctioned in this way.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the problem was due to an overly-sensitive emergency stop sensor, local news portal xinmin.cn reported.
An employee from the park said that the park had conducted special checkups in September in preparation for the upcoming National Day holiday.
The sensors had been adjusted to make them more sensitive, to the point where even a passing bird may have been enough to trigger them.
