Movie dream

Lu studied kung fu when he was in primary school and had many opportunities to perform on local TV shows, where he found he loved the camera. The early 1990s was when Jet Li and kung fu movies peaked in popularity, planting a dream in little Lu's mind to be an actor.

Lu started to create his own videos after he bought a camera in his second year of university in 2004.

Lu's work was popular online and around campus, and sparked a moviemaking trend among other students. His early projects received awards at the Beijing College Student Film Festival.

After graduation, Lu continued on this path and became a professional video producer, working mostly on advertisements.

While producing these ads, clients made many demands of him, Lu maintained his impulse to make the work humorous and ambitious.

In November 2008, Lu started to produce Hip Hop Quartet. The comedy, which features humorous stories of a manager and his subordinates and had advertisements inserted in it, garnered more than 200 million views online in one year with only five minutes of footage in each episode.

"I wanted to end the series in season two, but I received messages from the audience asking for the sequel," he said.

The cooperation with Chow in 2011 gave Lu the opportunity to experience what it's like to be a member of a successful crew. Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons bagged 1.2 billion yuan ($208 million) at the box office. It also built up Lu's confidence.

Lu told the Global Times he plans to have a new film out in 2014, headed for a theatrical release instead of streaming online.
