Reversible lanes, also called tidal lanes, will open in Beijing on Thursday on Chaoyang Road, a thoroughfare on the city's east side, to relieve road congestion during the city's worst traffic month.

The heaviest traffic congestion this year falls in September, due to a confluence of holidays, school start dates, tourism and other factors.

The reversible lanes will allow traffic to move in either direction depending on certain conditions.

Drivers are thus advised to pay attention to road signs at road conjunctions between 5 pm and 8 pm, when the reversible lanes may be altered depending on traffic.
