Eight of the 10 most popular Weibo celebrities followed by college students are actors or singers, according to a report on microblog development in universities on Friday.

The report, released jointly by the psychology institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Sina Weibo, China's leading social network, said that college users have surged from less than two million in 2010 to more than 30 million at the end of June 2013.

According to the report, the average age of the 10,686 respondents is 20.84, with more male students using Weibo than female students.

The report also shows that Weibo is considered a platform that provides job-hunting information and business opportunities for students.

Nearly 40 percent of students think that Weibo is conducive to improving job-hunting skills and 46 percent of people agree it contributes to starting one's own business.

The report said more than 57 percent of the surveyed students feel low levels of happiness and get an average score of 18.41 points (of a total 35) on the Satisfaction with Life Scale, a commonly-used criterion to measure happiness worldwide.
