China.s manned submersible, the Jiaolong, will soon make its third descent into the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The Jialong will dive over 5-thousand meters below water to retrieve a cage placed in the ocean by scientists to catch sea creatures for study. An unusual deep sea organism was spotted on Saturday. Scientists said it resembled a species of rat-tail, a family of reasonably large deep-sea fish.

The submersible is on a 2-month experimental application mission that began on July 19th. It arrived at an ore rich zone in the northeast Pacific on Thursday. The mission.s main objective is to examine Jiaolong.s deep sea scientific research capabilities, explore deep sea resources, and pave the way for future mining activities. The two-month mission marks the start of a five-year trial period for the submersible before it.s put into regular operation.
