Biodiesel made from recycled cooking oil, known as gutter oil, will be used to fuel 1,000 buses in Shanghai in 2014, local media reported.
The buses will run on fuel composed of 10 percent biodiesel.
The local food safety committee has reached an agreement with Tongji University to test out the fuel.
