Since the 1980s, China has started overall protection of tigers.

There are four tiger subspecies in China. These include the Amur tiger in the eastern mountains along the border between China's Jilin, Heilongjiang provinces and Russia. These number at around 20.

The Indo-Chinese tiger in the border regions of China's Yunnan province, Laos and Vietnam, which numbers around 30 in the country. The Bengal tiger is found in the forest bordering India and southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, numbering about 30 in China. And the South China tiger, which is a unique subspecies believed to be the ancestor of tigers. China has only 80 such tigers.
