Beijing dialect dying

Linguists have warned some strains of the Beijing dialect are at risk of extinction, the Beijing Youth Daily reports.

Zhang Shifang, a linguistic researcher at Beijing Language and Culture University, claims residents' growing preference to speak Putonghua due partly to the influx of migrant workers has caused strains of the Beijing dialect in the city's 16 districts and counties to be spoken less.
