More than 80 percent of accidental injuries to children in Shanghai are the result of their falling down or falling from heights, the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.

A research team that investigated 600 households with children from newborn to 6 years old in 2011 and 2012 found that falling down or falling from heights accounted for 82.6 percent of all injuries. Burns were the second most-common injuries, accounting for about 8.7 percent of the total.

Risks to children the study cited were unsafe toys, slippery floors and furniture. The absence of parents or guardians and a lack of safety awareness also contributed to children's accidental injuries.
