The recent heat wave will continue to bake the city this week with the high temperature reaching 37 C to 38 C Tuesday and Wednesday, the local weather bureau forecast Sunday.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow high temperature alert at 12:16 pm Sunday. The bureau issues the yellow alert, the lowest on its three-level warning system, when the temperature is expected to rise to above 35 C within the following 24 hours.

The bureau has issued seven heat warnings this year, six so far this month, including two orange alerts.

It issues an orange alert when the temperature is expected to rise above 37 C over the following 24 hours, said Fu Yi, the bureau's chief service officer.

The temperature will rise to at least 35 C between 22 days and 27 days this year, the bureau predicted.

From 1981 to 2010, the city experienced 15 such days each year on average, according to a report on the news website xinhuanet.com.

The weather will be cloudy Monday with temperatures ranging from 28 C to 35 C, the bureau forecast. Thunder showers will hit some parts of the city.

There will be sunny and cloudy weather from Tuesday to Thursday.
