A man accused in a hit-and-run case in Weifang, Shandong province, is the son of the victim.

The man, named Li, was driving a minivan at about 2 am on June 30, hit a man in his 50s and fled the scene, dzwww.com, a local online news portal, reported on Wednesday.

Li called his wife later to find out how the victim was doing, only to discover that the victim is his father, the report said.

Li's father, who was riding an electric scooter when the accident occurred, was hospitalized. But he was so badly injured that he couldn't tell the police what happened.

Based on the fragments of bumper at the scene, police suspected that the vehicle was a minivan, which they later found being repaired in a garage.

Police said Li will be charged in the case, but has released him so that he could take care of his father.
