Cops crack down on fake medicine at adult stores

Pudong New Area police have arrested 45 people in a recent crackdown on the sale of fake medication at adult stores, police announced Saturday.

Working with the local food and drug administration, police have visited more than 260 adult shops since Thursday afternoon to see if they were selling the illicit substances, according to a police press release.

Police found at least 65 shops that were selling fake "adult healthcare medicine" and confiscated more than 13,000 pills, according to the press release.

In Shanghai, "adult healthcare medicine" typically refers to medication used to treat impotence and other sexual dysfunctions.

In May, authorities asked the adult shops in Pudong to promise not to sell the phony medicine, but many shops continued to carry unapproved or counterfeit medication. Police said the medication can pose a danger to one's health.

The authorities are still investigating the case.
