Tobacco gets social

2013-05-29 10:12 Global Times     Web Editor: Wang YuXia comment

Tobacco advertisers are turning to youthful new media users. More and more ads are appearing on WeChat and Weibo, while the number of tobacco ads on TV and newspapers has dramatically decreased, according to the Beijing Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention.

The researchers monitored 32 provincial and municipal level TV stations and 91 newspapers and magazines for seven days, and found four tobacco advertisements on TV and seven on print media. The statistic is much lower than the figures in 2009, the Beijing Youth Daily reports.

Education institute director Liu Xiurou said the group also wanted to monitor Weibo and WeChat, but "the tobacco ads are just too numerous on such media, and we simply cannot finish monitoring them in seven days."
