Chinese film has been prominent in Cannes this year and a host of Chinese celebrities have been in France to promote China's burgeoning film industry. Pop singer Li Yuchun is among them.

An unconventional look for the red carpet.

Chinese pop singer turned super-star Li YuChun has graced several red carpets during her stay in Cannes, and her distinct style has been noted. She has rocked looks usually reserved for the catwalk, in Givenchy and Gareth Pugh get-ups.

Li says that she spends a lot of time considering her look because the festival is so important.

Li YuChun said, "Cannes Film Festival is very, very prestigious and a very respected festival, that is why we have carefully prepared all of the outfits for the red carpet. It was really hard work because I had to try on a lot of dresses. A lot of people are asking me 'why aren't you wearing a long dress like a princess. But that's not me. I think these two dresses are the best ones because they fit me and they are the most comfortable for me, and also in which I can feel self confident."

The 29-year-old singer rose to fame when she won 'Super Girl', the Chinese version of American Idol, which searched for the best female voices in China in 2005.

Her innovative look and inspired singing won the hearts of fans and she was crowned the winner of the show. Her win shocked audiences across China because she was so different from any of the other contestants. However, being handed fame on a plate hasn't made her complacent.

Li YuChun said, "Everything that has happened since I won the show has been unexpected. I have had the chance to participate in a lot of things such as appearing in movies and directing my own concert. I feel so lucky and happy. I think there are always a lot of possibilities and opportunities in your life. We should work hard and keep pushing ourselves forward."

And she certainly is showing no signs of slowing down. Li says she will keep doing what she loves to do but always stay true to herself.
