Thousands in Taiwan protest nuclear power project

2013-05-20 13:42 Xinhua     Web Editor: Mo Hong'e comment

About 10,000 people took to the street in Taipei on Sunday to protest against further development of nuclear power on the island.

The demonstration was launched by an environmental protection organization to protest the construction of a new nuclear power plant, which will be the fourth plant on the island.

Protestors held banners and flags that read such as "No Nuclear Power" and "We Don't Want Another Fukushima" in the demonstration.

Taiwan currently has three nuclear power plants in operation. The construction of the fourth one was decided by the Taiwan Power Company during the 1980s, but the project has been controversial among the public.
