The Xinhua News Agency, China's official wire service, released its first report on the nation's fast-developing new media industry on Wednesday.

The "Report on China's Rising New Media" summarizes the current condition and trends of the industry, which expanded rapidly in 2012. It also analyzes the roles of the Internet, mobile telecommunications and digital technology in pushing the industry's growth.

"The development of technology and telecommunications infrastructure are the cornerstone and engine of the rise of China's new media. Corporate participation and market demand, as well as diversifying media modes, provide dynamics and support," the report says.

Shen Haixiong, deputy chief editor of Xinhua, said at the releasing ceremony that with global media experiencing profound changes, a new round of digital transformation has had increasing impact on traditional media.

Heated competition, deepening integration and regional reshuffling have become increasingly prominent trends in the industry, he said.
