A 1-year-old boy remained in intensive care Monday evening after his agitated father hurled him to the ground at a hospital in Pudong New Area, local media reported Monday.

The boy was being treated at Shanghai Renji Hospital for a skull fracture and cerebral hemorrhage, according to a news report on Shanghai Television Station. Police have detained the boy's father, surnamed Chen.

Hospital surveillance video footage showed that the 31-year-old Hubei Province man was holding his son while making a phone call at the hospital Sunday night when he suddenly hurled the boy away from him, according to the report.

"The boy's head hit to the ground first," a witness surnamed Wu told the TV station.

The impact knocked out the boy, who was bleeding from his mouth and ears, Wu said.

It was unclear what set Chen off. On the night of the attack, he was on the phone with his wife's brother, who told the TV station that Chen was angry because he couldn't find his wife's ward at the hospital.

The brother-in-law said Chen had slashed his wife in the abdomen three days before during an argument over their children, according to the report.

"He had asked me to send the children back to our hometown, but I refused and kept working," Chen's wife told a local TV station.
