A British man wanted by British police for alleged child sex offences has been detained in Beijing for illegally staying in China, the Beijing News reported late Friday, citing police sources in the capital city.

The report did not provide details. Calls to the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau went unanswered Friday.

Neil Robinson, 47, is wanted for in connection with distribution of indecent images of children and the rape of a child, according to Crimewatch, a British television program screened by the BBC in September 2012.

Robinson has links to Surrey and Sussex but he may have traveled abroad, Crimewatch said.

The news had been circulating via Chinese social networks over the last few days, after online forums for expatriates in China posted the information about Robinson, linking to the BBC Crimewatch story. Sources said the last sighting of Robinson appears to have been at an international school in Beijing.

According to beijing-kids.com, Robinson used to teach in an international school in Beijing called the Beijing World Youth Academy.

A school spokesperson said they had not received any formal or informal complaints against him while he worked there, according to the beijing-kids.com report.
