Beijing Intl Film Festival presents diverse panorama

Having a major film festival in town means fans can see their favorite flicks on the big screen, rather than on DVD. The Panorama Section of the 2013 Beijing International Film Festival provides just such an opportunity. Let's check out some of the highlights of this year's line-up.

Beijing has finalized its Panorama, replete with 260 films from European, American, Latin and Asian filmmakers. This year's Oscar winner "Silver Linings Playbook" has been chosen as the opener.

The line-up focuses largely on recent productions. A quarter of the films were produced after 2012, and have been participants in various global film festivals.

Rao Shuguang, deputy director of China Film Art Research Centre, said, "It's not only about paying tribute to timeless classics. We selected highly regarded contemporary works recommended by film festivals and awards organizers."

"Diversity" is the keyword of this year's event. A showcase featuring Russia, France, Turkey, Thailand, Canada and Spain offers a glimpse into their social and cultural worlds. Other highlights include "Amour", the Best Foreign Film at the 2013 Academy Awards, and the quirky Scottish comedy "Angel's Share" by Ken Loach. Austrian documentary "Crossing Borders" and Romanian drama "Child's Pose" will also be screened.

Xie Fei, a director, said, "The panorama section is a nice supplement to the releases by commercial theatre chains. The independent productions, especially art films, deserve a chance to be shown to the public. That's also what film fans want."

The full schedule can be seen at the festival's official website. And just like previous years, ticket prices will remain very affordable. Booking online may even get you bigger discounts.
