Toronto (CNS) – Chinese will replace white people as the majority of the population in the Greater Vancouver Region in 18 years, the latest study by the University of British Columbia shows.

Before the 1980s, the majority of the population in the region was white, but that population composition will be dramatically reversed in 2031 as immigration increases, the study says. By then, only two out of every five Vancouver citizens will be white.

The study was conducted by Professor Daniel Hiebert, as entrusted by the Canadian Ministry of Immigration and Citizenship.

Based on Canadian census data, Hiebert predicts that Chinese will become the majority followed by South Asians, Filipinos, South Koreans, and West Asians (mainly Iranians).

The minority population (non-whites) will increase by a large margin to 1.15 million, accounting for 59 percent of the total population in the region by 2031, while the white population will grow only by 150,000, the study shows.

Hiebert also predicts that the increasing ethnic population will lead to racial segregation similar to that of the Blacks and Whites that occurred in major American cities in the past.

The immigration population in the region will continue to rise, and Canadian citizens whose grandparents still remain in Canada will only be 25 percent by 2031.

Both Toronto and Vancouver will face brand new socio-geographic structures, says Hiebert.
