Police are looking into whether a driver was under the influence of drugs when he injured three people while careening around a neighborhood in Pudong New Area Saturday night.

Police have sent blood and urine samples from the driver, surnamed Xue, for testing and are waiting for the results, said a press officer surnamed Ji from the Pudong New Area Public Security Bureau Sunday.

The police received several calls from local residents who saw a driver repeatedly crash his car into several other vehicles as he drove from Lingyan Road South to Changqing Road, according to a police press release. Xue left 11 cars damaged that night.

The incident began after 10 pm, when a driver pulled his black Buick into a residential complex on Lingyan Road South and stopped at the behest of a security guard on duty, the Xinmin Evening News reported.

Surveillance camera footage showed that a black Buick stopped just inside the complex's security gate, according to a news report on Shanghai Television Station.

In an attempt to leave the complex, the driver put the car in reverse and slammed it into the white Nissan waiting behind it.

The driver then pulled the car forward, threw it into reverse, and crashed into the car behind him again, according to the report. He repeated the maneuver about a dozen times until he had pushed the Nissan out of the way.

The complex's security staff had never seen Xue's car before, and it wasn't registered with the complex's management, a complex security guard told the Global Times.

When the security guard tried to close the gate behind the Buick, Xue turned his car around and hit the gate several times until it broke.

Xue hit several objects on his way out of the complex, heading toward Sanlin Road. The Xinmin Evening News reported that Xue crashed into a police motorcycle and hit several other cars. The Buick's driver was driving faster than 100 kilometers per hour, one witness told the Xinmin Evening News. The witness said he was also almost hit by the car.

Xue crashed the car through the gate of a textile market on Sanlin Road, hitting several cars and mopeds parked in front of it. He drove his car into a store inside the market, before finally coming to a stop.

Police said Xue was unable to think clearly when he was arrested.
