Dress code for working women fashion evolution

While Ms Zhou walked us through some trendy outfits for her age, her daughter Xiaoxi is eager to show us how working women today like to dress. As we see here, the choices are unlimited.

For Xiaoxi, a 30-year-old white collar worker, this is the outfit she's chosen to wear while hanging out with her friends.

Xu Xiaoxi, Beijing resident, said "To go with my leather coat, I've picked these tight leggings to give it a casual feeling. I remember wearing leggings similar to this when I was little. But they only came in black and had hoops at the bottom. I think they were called stirrup leggings."

For these famous little black leggings, it all started in 1998. Aerobic dancing coach Ma Hua first introduced them to the Chinese public during the Spring Festival Gala.

This national phenomenon showed the craving for a healthy yet curvy figure, and the leggings fit right into that picture.

From schoolgirls to grandmas, almost everyone had them. Some men wore them too.

There was a jingle that best describes the trend back in the 90s: jackets for Jack and leggings for Jill.

After showing us her everyday look, Xiaoxi invites us for a peak inside her closet.

Xu said "Here's my Spring and Summer wear with a lot of pink and nude colors. And here we have the classic blacks and whites, they are the basic structure of my closet. I got these clothes from different places. Like this one here, I got it online."

Compared to the older generation, who mainly got their clothes tailored or bought them at malls, young people today consider online shopping a more convenient alternative.

Xu continued,"Back in her youth, my mother didn't have many accessories to go with her outfits. But now I have so many choices. I can use scarfs or belts to match my clothes and create different looks."

If her Grandma's chrysanthemum scarf and her mother's jewellery shined during their younger years, Xiaoxi faces a much more diverse fashion market today.

Xu said " I like this particular suit very much. With the high pace of city life, we would all like to have one good quality garment that goes with different occasions."

Fashion may change over the years, but the pursuit of beauty is never lost.
