South Korea's Foreign Ministry on Thursday voiced hope for enhanced bilateral relations with China under the leadership of new Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"The South Korean government congratulates China's Community Party Central Committee General Secretary Xi Jinping on being elected president of China," Seoul's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Cho Tai-young said.

"With the new Chinese government, we hope to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries based on 20 years of dynamic progress in bilateral relations and contribute to stability and prosperity in East Asia," Cho added.

The statement came shortly after Xi was elected Chinese president at the ongoing session of the 12th National People's Congress, China's top legislature, replacing Hu Jintao.

South Korea and China established formal diplomatic ties in 1992.
