President Hu Jintao on Tuesday stressed that the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations is in accord with the overall interests of the Chinese nation.

It also falls in line with the wishes of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, as proven by material progress made in recent years, Hu said while meeting visiting Honorary Chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) Lien Chan in the Great Hall of the People.

Hu also called on compatriots across the Strait to have faith in the adherence to the path of peaceful development, as well as a promising future for cross-Strait relations.
